  1. " As Ben Franklin was leaving Independence Hall at the close of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, a Mrs Powell of Philadelphia asked him “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a republic or a monarchy?” His reply: "A republic, if you can keep it." "

We do not now, nor have we ever had, a Democracy. Remember the Pledge of Allegiance? "And to the Republic for which it stands…." We have a Republic: we elect people to represent us and we're supposed to trust that they will do what is best for us. Today Representatives and Senators no longer represent us but represent big money interests instead.

If we had a Democracy, We the People would be voting on everything that is brought before Congress. If we had a Democracy, we would NOT have senators or representatives. With the mess Congress has made of things by making laws that benefit ONLY Big Money interests (especially the war-makers), a Democracy sounds very appealing right now.

The ancient Greeks distrusted democracies and considered them mob rule, which is, in effect, what "majority rules" means: mob rule.

  2. I hate the notion that independents are republicans in disguise. I was a Democrat and just so fed up with the lies and the corruption that I switched to independent- and I still hate 99.9% of Republicans and what they stand for.

  3. This guy is really good. I was impressed. I will look at the Daily Beast again with a fresh eye.  And I'll check out the book too (literally. It sounds like a library loan type of book, not a keeper) .

  4. Do you really think you have a president in stead of a dictator?
I'm living in the Netherlands, but if our prime minister got the job with the help of a foreign country- had family, friends and generals in important places-admired dictators-was advised by people who also advised known dictators-lies in every sentence-was undoing all the right things his predecessor did and says things like: "I am not supposed to be involved with the DOJ" "I am not supposed to be involved with the FBI" "I am not supposed to be doing the kind of things that I love to be doing and I am very frustrated by it" you all wouldn't say that I was living in a democracy, now would you❓

  5. Imagine a world in which all American leaders are chosen by a popular vote of their entire respective constituencies. Feels nice doesn't it? It's one of those things that you can immediately recognize as an improvement, but hasn't happened for some reason. Political parties wield so much power that they have literally become a layer of abstraction between people and elections. Parties determine when your voice matters, how much it matters, which candidates you can choose from, and undermine the very nature of democracy. #NoPartySystem

  6. Don't forget that Washington did murder people and had slaves… as bad as Trump seems, and as wonderful Washington was… facts are facts. Having said that, I also understand culture changes throughout history. So, war was normal in Washington's Days and so was slavery. But, he still killed people and owned slaves. I also loved this interview and want to read this book. My point is… people have an agenda and it's important to understand the full story before judging. Trump hasn't killed or enslaved anyone. That's a correct comparison of these two presidents.

  7. Drumpf: The orange ass clown who lacks moral fiber and common sense, reads and thinks like a selfish, egotistical 5th grader. I shudder to think how many years America will be set back and how long it will take to recover.

  8. Centrism doesnt work. See cause … being in the middle between ideas isnt actually being objective. The right and the left shouldnt meet half way … its always a compromise in favour of the right in the end, cause their ideas more often than not are on the wrong side of history and arent really helping anyone but the powerful and the rich (and NO the democratic party isnt the left or even the center either – they are center right with most politics)

The rights ideas arent just wrong 50% of the time and thats why we should meet them half way for the other half …. they are wrong like 90% of the time at least.

Centrism is a horrible idea, made up by people that dont have the strength and will to decide for what is right and stand for it. Its comprised of shady compromise that LED us to where we are now as a species – constant war, rampant neoliberal capitalism, mass poverty, hunger and disease, unrest, constant conflict, the rise of the right, the destruction of nature and our habitat, because we did not push back hard enough when confronted with the people and ideas that promote such acts in the name of country, power and money, but because we invited them to a dialogue were there should not be one and then to appease them, gave in to their demands over and over again – cause "democracy and muh dialogue"

Centrism is NOT the answer, its part of the problem.

  9. The daily beast is a disgusting pseudo journalist cesspool.
Their democratic primary campaign coverage was hirrendous. The way they went out of their way to smear and attack bernie sanders, it almost seemed like it was some right wing hack organisation like fox news. Hell even fox newa wasnt as dishonest and unfair to bernie sanders and they are basically propaganda 101.
It wasnt surprising at all to find out Chelsea clinton was on their B.o.D.. Smh

  10. Know them by their fruits. That's what the Bible says. Dont let people use the Bible when they do not act like Christians. It turns a lot of people away from God erroneously.

  11. I like Avlon's definition of centrism. Doesn't matter what team the good guys and bad guys are on. He'll build the good guys up and trample the bad because that's what he does. Hats off to you, sir.

  12. Yeah, because Trump who started as an independent never spoke out about the party system being bad. I don't know how you can blame the current problems of the States ( no real democracy, debt, partisanship) on Trump. Makes no sense at all.

  13. Fantastic idea: Demolish political parties! Everyone should run as an independent. It would really help us from electing the wrong people to public office simply because of party affiliation.
